Baseline

Baseline in Lean implementation or operational excellence is the starting condition against which performance improvement or degradation is measured. When you have a baseline, you can measure if things have gotten better or worse by comparison against the established (starting) baseline condition.

When doing any form of process improvement it is essential to establish a baseline, sometimes referred to as the current state. Baseline measurement is part of any good scientific problem solving method.
